HANNAH'S STORY
Amador Valley High School | Las Positas College
I chose to go to a community college because I felt the 4 year school I chose originally wasn’t the right place to be and I knew I would be more successful somewhere else if I transferred from a Community College.
Additionally, I wasn’t sure about my major and I knew going to a community college would give me more time to think about my choices.
WHY ARE YOU SHARING YOUR STORY?
I went to San Diego State University out of high school and it just didn’t feel like the right school for me. I had been pressured to go to a 4-year college at my high school and by the decisions of others around me but I ended up being extremely unhappy there. Coming back home and going to a Community College has made me a lot happier and more hopeful about my academic future.
THING I WISH I HAD KNOWN
Make sure you choose a school you love, I chose a school because I thought I had to go to a four year but now I’m much happier starting at a Community College and transferring later.
I do hope that those considering the community college path try to be proactive about their course work. As a STEM major you need a lot of science classes in order to transfer so it is good to know when they are available during the year so you can complete the sequences in an appropriate amount of time.
ADDED OPPORTUNITY
Aside from the financial benefit of community college I’m glad I came to Las Positas because I had the opportunity to join the swim team where I qualified for the state meet.
I’m especially happy about the environment community college has provided me as I am able to join clubs and student associations that help me expand my knowledge outside the classroom.
